- Emperor (q.v.) from 450-457. A capable soldier promoted by the barbarian general Aspar (q.v.), his reign was a reaction to the pro-Monophysite policy of Theodosios II (qq.v.), whose sister Pulcheria (q.v.) he married. Marcian called the Council of Chalcedon (q.v.) in 451, which overturned the decrees of the "Robber" Council of Ephesus (q.v.). Marcian's refusal to pay Attila (q.v.) provoked the Huns to invade Italy (qq.v.); Attila withdrew in 452 after negotiating with Pope Leo I (q.v.). When Marcian died, Aspar (q.v.) chose Leo (I) as emperor.
